Well.. getting a Thai name isn't easy neither. To get a good Thai name, they have to take into account to stuff like what the parents name are, when the parents were born, and what day of the week the kid is born. So most of the factors we can deal w, but the day of the week the kid is born is the hardest. So we will need 7 Thai name ready.

So what is a good stroke count? Well.. it might be easier to tell me what stroke count to avoid.

That only depends which country's superstition you believe in. In Japan, Korea and China "4" is to avoid, as the kanji pronuciation is the same as for the word "death". In the US, I guess "13" isn't good (some Christian would also say "6", which is the devil's number). What about Thailand ? Don't consider too many countries or you won't be able to choose anything !

This is a Japanese book (the encyclopedia of baby names) that gives more information on "kakusu" (画数) which may be of some marginal help, I'm not sure. Anyway, there should be numerous English titles available as well. Good luck. You can always take the child to a Shinto priest for naming if all else fails .

Elizabeth, what's the point recommending a book in Japanese (and on Amazon Japan) for our Thai-American friend who said he didn't speak Japanese ?
For the Shinto priest, he will have to come to Japan in addition to speaking Japanese !

Well because the chapter headings led me to think that some of the information on stroke counts and such was probably presented in graphic form and in accord with a listing of individual names. In contrast to the priest suggestion which was purely from the lightness of my heart. I don't even know how many Japanese couples still follow that particular route to good fortune.

Appreciate your input. We have decided on about 4-5 names. We need to see the baby first, before we decide on the final name.
