If it has a mane, it's a male. I like the idea of a lioness though, I think they're way more badass than the males anyways!

I think you're making the right choice by not using Kanji; as an ideographic writing system with multiple possible meanings and readings, it's very difficult to arrive at a combination that approximates both the sound and meaning you want; sometimes language just doesn't cooperate.
