I've made a number of Japanese speaking friends via an online game I play and, being an utter beginner in the language, thought I'd drop on here and try and improve my skills.

How utter a beginner? I kept thinking one of my online friends must be fairly young cause he kept misspelling yoroshiku as yorosiku and ochimasu as otimasu. (Neither of us are sure how much the other knows of the other's language so he uses romaji instead of hiragana) Needless to say since discovering the Kunreisiki style of romajii our conversations go a lot smoother...

Three possiblities. 1) A foreign student of Japanese transliterating the hiragana, 2) A Japanese trying to make the transliteration consistent with the syllabry chart, 3) A player from the past speaking Old Japanese. btw figuring out the other's language and level seems to be part of the game, is it ? :?

I'm sure they do.

Speaking old Japanese? I doubt it. The main system of romanization in Japan in Kunrei-shiki, and that's what Japanese people use most of the time.
