News Gunma police mistakenly arrest foreign resident during visa renewal

A foreign resident renewing his Japanese visa was mistakenly arrested in Gunma for overstaying but was released two days later. The unfortunate chap, residing in Ashikaga, Tochigi , was involved in a light car accident in the Gunma city of Ota for allegedly violating the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.

The man was applying for an extension of his stay and was under a special period to stay legally. The prefectural police apologized to the man for the mistake. According to the prefectural police, there was a report of a single light car accident in the Gunma Prefecture city of Ota at around 8 a.m. on Sept. 17. When officers from Ota Police Station rushed to the scene. They suspected the driver was illegally overstaying in Japan, so they asked him to accompany them to the police station voluntarily. An officer then inquired with the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau about the man's visa status. The foreigner was on a particular two-month period from the expiration of his residency. Still, the officer overlooked the bureau's reply that he was "in the process of applying for renewal" and arrested him at around 7:30 p.m. on the same day.
