On 9 September, graffiti was found on pillars at Kasugataisha Shrine, a World Heritage site in Nara, leading the Nara Prefectural Police to open an investigation on suspicion of breaching the Act on Protection of Cultural Properties and other related laws. The markings, painted in blue and thought to be kanji characters, were located on a pillar of the shrine's east corridor, which is recognised as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
