Good technique for listening practice

Yahoo Japan has videos of the latest news stories along with the script of what was said by the reporter. See 映像ニュース - Yahoo!ニュース

To practice listening I follow these 4 steps -
1) listen to the news story once without looking at the video. I write down every word and particle that I hear. For me, it's pretty important that I listen out for those pesky particles because I always seem to miss them when someone is speaking to me.
2) play the news story again but this time watch the video, and again, jot down any words that I hear
3) play the news story for a third time, but this time read the actual script that comes with it (but only if you can actually read it). I usually find a heap of words in there that I completely missed
4) (optional), run the script through an online translator to see if you actually understood the story properly

Obviously your Japanese is light years ahead of my own ... but there's no substitute for hearing the real thing, is there!

This site of NHK radio programs actually has the very interesting feature of a 'yukkuri' or slowed-down (as well as speeded up when you're in a hurry ) version of each newscast that I've found an extremely useful tool over the past year or so. And have now graduated to the point where skimming through a mostly verbatim transcript off the main page : NHK is sufficient and the altered playback inhibits my processing.

There are definately an array of great techniques out there -- Bucko's suggestion of transcribing being a prime example I had never considered.
Maybe because my handwriting is such a disgrace it would almost have
to be done online...

Asahi (ANN) news is another good outlet, more comprehensive than yahoo but also with video and audio formating for each story. But chuui shite kudasai. You sometimes find slight variations and tweaking between the script and announcer that will keep everyone on their toes !

On the contrary! I'm sure your Japanese is better than mine (been studying properly for just over 10 months). When I do that listening practice all I really end up with is a page of random words and particles that I heard. Usually I'll only understand the jist of the story if I hear some Japanised katakana-English. Still, it works well. I think I even noticed a difference after just one day of doing this technique!

Wow Elizabeth that slowed down feature is great!! I can actually comprehend every syllable!, and the sped up version is, well, bizzare!
