Gomen nasai or sumimasen ?

Hi,

I am a Japanese beginner learner but I think I might be able to give a few ideas to understand it better. Lets see if it might work:

Imagine these words in English instead Japanese and try to put them in English sentences and check where often it can be used.

1. sumimasen (Please accept my apologies)
2. gomen nasai (Sorry or I am sorry)
3. shitsurei shimashita (Please accept my apologies.. for keeping you waiting/for disturbing you/doing any other action in disturbing the person from his/her normal routine)

Think 1 as an office worker apologizing to his Boss.
Think 2 as a student apologizing to a teacher.
Think 3 as a secretary disturbing her boss on an urgent matter.
