At all? Well maybe some.

I heard it was Akira :p

lol Well...depends ^^
For some people it started with osamu tetsuka's animes, for other people it was dragon ball Z and sailor moon, etc...

Yea i have heard a lot about Dragon ball Z (it was ok) Akira i heard it was good also ghost in the shell i have seen it in a lot of shops where my brothers live (I might pick up a copy)

But i not sure that was what kicked off anime being all around the world.

What started the popularity in anime is most likely what came over to the States as Speed Racer and Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) Account Suspended
Steven Spielberg got into anime (apparently) after watching the Miyazaki Hayao classic Lupin the 3rd: Cagliostro's Castle. Then, after Hollywood marketers butchered Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind by making it into the "Warriors of the Wind," they proceeded to make the edited version of three anime series known as Robotech. As the popularity slowly grew (at least in the US), movies like Akira and Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star) emerged onto the scene, and the US public saw a "cartoon" style that was so unlike Disney or anything else in the Hollywood brand of animated features. Ghost in the Shell is a latecomer into the anime scene...but then, most people's memories are rather short....so it is easy to see how flashy anime with extreme violence can catch the eye...

really is too bad, though, that most anime shown in the US market is only related towards marketing of toys (Pokemon style), edited only for action (dragonball and other series with combat) or focused on sex. There are some exceptions to this rule, but there are whole series out there that most anime otakus will rarely see out on DVD because it is too culturally oriented or will not be a good marketing tool to sell toys....or computer games... :(
