GED in Japan?

Hey,

Basically, Is a GED worth the paper it's printed on, in Japan?
I have one and I've been looking at language schools, junior colleges and universities. The cliche phrase is "12 years of formal education or equivalent."

Do you mean in terms of getting a working visa or presenting it as a qualification to work?

The fastest thing to do would be e-mail the visa unit of the Japanese consulate/embassy in your country. Part of thier job is fielding these questions. Might take a few days to get back to you, but then it is right from the horse's mouth.

I'm guessing its like SACE here (heh), a certificate saying you have completed year12 of secondary school (high school).

General Education Degree or Diploma (if I'm not mistaken)

GED is a bit of paper in the US saying you have, what is legally considered to be, a high school diploma. However, the GED is not the same thing as a high school diploma. I'm not saying it is not as good, just different.

Also, having reread your post, instead of contacting embassies and consulates, try the language school and or university you are looking at. Since they will be the ones to sponsor you, they are the ones who will decide if your GRE is OK to use. Sorry about that...

G.E.D. stands for "General Equivalency Diploma". It basically says I have an education equivalent to a highschool graduate but I didn't complete highschool (due to inevitable circumstances [but you can also take it instead by choice]). Application to universities and stuff is quite a bit different with a GED.

I'm more concerned that the japanese Ministry of Immigration won't accept it as "equivalent to a japanese senior highschool graduate". So I'll email them about that.
