I decided to start this thread to address another question I have: How hard is it for a Gaijin who speaks Int. level japanese to get an apartment? I've heard it's next to impossible. Also, on a side track, is it possible to buy health insurance for those who are not covered on an employers policy? Thanks everyone, I know these are probably basic questions but I cant seem to find the answers anywhere else.

What do you consider to be intermediate level japanese? I dont consider it to be impossible, if you are properly prepared (have looked at what you want, understand how things work, have someone to sign off for you, got a visa and a job so they know your serious), speak politely and maybe take a friend to help you its not an unreachable goal.

But still be prepared for some predjudice and bumps along the way.

As Thomas pointed out, we have solutions for all foreigners who are looking for an apartment in Japan (at least Tokyo). That's also the service at Japan Reference.

i also want to get an appartment in Nihon, and I am gaijin. this post makes me sad
