My girlfriend just said the funniest thing I have heard in a long time.

Translated:
Your eyes are big so stuff can get in them.

This is from a conversation about my eyes being red and irritated for some reason.

I wondered if many Japanese people have thought this thought at some point or another.
I guess that confirmed it fo rme. She also said many Japanese think that.

My girlfriend is Vietnamese and she has commented about how beautiful my big Italian eyes are and tried to open hers more Never had someone talk about it being a bad thing ☝

But she is vietnamese so maybe this dosent apply to your question

Nobody in Japan ever told me that I had big eyes (and my eyes are not small), but I never had a girlfriend in Japan (not even one for the night). On the other hand, some of the bar girls I encountered in the Philippines claimed to find hair on a man's chest very attractive.

My Japanese friends were suprised to find out that I had to wear contacts or glasses, they said with such big eyes they figured I could see better. I don't think it was meant as a joke. They also said that we had a wider range of vision than asians with "tight" eyes. I assume that meant more slanted or squinted. I was also asked what colors looked like to me because my eyes are blue. I suppose when everyone in your family, or most of the country you live in, has the same color eyes and similar features, the questions that are asked are out of genuine curiosity.

Sorry if this is an ignorant question but are eyes a big deal in Japan?

I've heard stories about people being critisized for having too thin eyes or being called ugly because of that. And that surgeries to make the eyes bigger are the most sought after plastic surgery in the whole if Asia.

It's not something we ever really think about here, it's just not a big deal, so I was surprised at all the attention that seems to be paid to the size of eyes in Japan. Especially since a lot of the old Japanese paintings and dolls have the women with very thin, slanted eyes, so it seems that once thin eyes were thought to be beautiful.

Hmmmm, most animes that you watch (of the same type of drawing as love hina and chobits) features all the girls with HUGE eyes. It seems that it makes it all the easier to draw crying effects or the shimmering love effect...
Whilst most male characters seem to have slightly smaller eyes.

Anyways, its not too important. If your girlfriend says something like that again, just say 'I love you too', or 'but you love me anyway, right?'.

When one of my Korean students told me that she wanted plastic surgery to make her eyes look bigger, I almost cried >< I can see absolutely nothing wrong with asian people's eyes, I think they're beautiful if anything, but I certainly wouldn't want to go under the knife to make myself look any different. Weird thing is her eyes were actually a lot larger than the average asian's anyway.

Seems plastic surgery is getting more and more popular over there, noticably eye-lid manipulation and jaw reconstruction.

It's so sad that people aren't always happy with the way they look.

They need to know that they're beautifull.
If somebody could just, say that to them.
Maybe they'd feel better and dont do the surgery.

Coz, the most beautifull thing of a human, those are the eyes for me.

hehe so whaddya do if your ugly & ill? thats gotta be a downer

meh, people are always going to be unhappy with their looks, both men and women. i think its daft and im sure most people do but there's always some that dont and i think that if a simple surgery can make them happy again then i cant blame them for doing it. hehe probably cheaper than years and years of psychiatry to try and make you like the face you have beforehand

That's just stupid people need to stop being so freaken selfish and get over there looks...there are more important things besides how you look
