Hi, i was thinking, for no real reason, to myself today.
Basicly i have a few things, a bust lip sore back, so, it got me thinking down the road of remedies people swear by that arnt sponsored by official medical science.

All to often folk ussually find their own ways of dealing with pain/illness other then the doctor and some antibiotics or drugs or whatever.

So, share your own little personal remedies and cures for pain and illness that effects us in our daily lives, and who knows, you may descover something while you contribute.

Sorry if the thread isnt too well written, ive had two nights of pretty much no sleep :S. :p

I swear by folk remedies, as I don't trust doctors. Here are my favourites:

Indigestion: peppermint tea

Coughs, colds & sore throats: lemon & ginger tea with honey

Headache: peppermint oil

Sleeplessness: lavender oil

Dry skin: aloe vera gel

Eczema: tea tree oil

Cystitis: cranberry juice

Alternative medicine is the greatest alternative when western medicine fails

General preventive measures:

1. drink all kinds of non-alcoholic bev's
1a) clean, dechlorinated water
1b) tons of coffee
1c) all kinds of broth, as much as I can handle, and try to finish any that comes with noodles sa. ramen. :)
1d) drink water in small, continuous sips whenever I travel. This will keep my nucous membrane clean by flushing down any contaminants that might have got onto my membranes.
1e) drink as little of alcoholic bev's for they slow down other metabolisms than the breakig down of alcohol

2. smoke often. By introducing certain irritants, the mucous membrane along the air tract is constantly flushing out other contaminants as well. It is amazing how infrequently I have caught cold since I started smoking. I would not encourage smoking per se to youths, but for the long-time smokers, I would just like to point out that it does have certain benefits.

3. eat lots and lots of vegetables such as lettuce or cabbage. :) The "life-force of vegetables," still not fully understood by modern science, have great healing powers imho. Gee, I feel like a medicine man talking like this, but it's true. Modern medicine (or western medicine) can often be so idiotic, and there are many things that an informed non-mainstream approach can offer certain patients suffering from medical conditions little understood.

4. konpu, a cousin to kelp, is an excellent prevention (and possibly cure) of the problems with the large intestines; esp. the rectum and the colon.

That's interesting about the smoking, Lexico! :smoke:

'Folk' remedies that I use... well, if I have a headache I make a pot of tea (real leaf tea, not tea bags - I drink leaf tea anyways) and put four or five cloves in the pot with it. This really does work. It only doesn't work for me if I've let the headache get too bad, like to the stage where it's really pounding. It works fine when a headache is beginning. I heard somewhere that cloves are routinely used as ingredient in painkilling stuff, like for instance dentists will sometimes put oil of cloves on an aching tooth and in the older days (like 1950s and '60s) oil of cloves was used as an anaesthetic at the dentist. So I guess it's not just an old wives tale...

Another one is for hiccups, to drink out of the 'wrong' side of the glass (i.e. you have to bend over to drink it). That one works for me (taking small sips, and finish the glass), just make sure you are on your own! :D Swallowing a teaspoonful of vinegar also gets rid of hiccups double quick, but I tried it once and... never again!!! 😲
