Face masks as social barriers

The Tokyo Shinbun reported how much of an ingrained habit mask-wearing has become. Pupils are getting more hesitant to take off their masks and reveal their faces. The article below points out that in Japan the trend to hide behind masks had already started before the pandemic.

Just yesterday, a JH teacher told me that about 50% of her students refuse to take off their masks during online classes. The school board asked her and the other teachers not to exert any pressure.

I can see some of that here in the US as well. I wonder if part of it, for Japanese students, is related to preventing bullying as well? If you see someone in the street you don't have a face to match with anyone you might know. Still, probably most bullying these days is done "online".

I do it too 🤧 I'm in the US now and although I'm not in school anymore I know when I was in school and even during work I'd rather keep my mask on than to show my face and disgrace eyes that don't deserve to look upon such horror 😮‍💨
