I am an Aussie (ﾆ棚ﾂーﾆ湛ﾆ暖ﾆ停?ｰﾆ椎?ﾆ但ﾂ人 )ﾂ who studies Japanese so that I can better appreciate enka singersﾂ 窶ｰ窶ｰ窶ｰﾃ娯?堙娯?ｰﾃ固ｽﾃｨ. I enjoy reading about why other people enjoy enka. My favourite singers are Tendo Yoshimiﾂ 窶弖窶慊ｶ窶堙ｦ窶堋ｵ窶堙 andﾂ 窶卍ｹ窶ｰHﾋ?ｪﾋ弸. My favourite enka song is ﾂ税停?堋ｲ窶堋ｱ窶堙ｫ

Greets, fellow enkafan!

I'm a Kitajima Saburo fan from way back. Second to him, it's a tie between Sakamoto Fuyumi and Yoshi Ikuzo.

Hono; no Otoko was the first song I learned in Japanese, followed closely by Yosaku, Matsuri (da), Hakodate no onna, Yuki guni, Sake yo, Abare daiko, and (as a blast from the past) Akogare Hawaii no koro.

Enka

Thank you for your enthusiastic response. Yes, I like Kitajima Saburo too, especially his song Take 窶處 which is full of feeling. I also like Sakamoto Fuyumi, especially Iwai Sake ﾂ祝窶堋｢ﾅｽﾃｰ.
My other favourite singer is Misora Hibari. I like these songs of hers best:

Geidou Ichidai ﾅ竹窶慊ｹﾋ?ｪ窶佚｣
When I listen to those ones I can feel myself floating into another world of elegant and passionate people.
I first was attracted to Japanese songs by the best seller Koyubi no Omoide ﾂ渉ｬﾅｽw窶堙固ｽv窶堋｢ﾂ出ﾂ by Itou Yukariﾂ ﾋ?俄?慊｡窶堙､窶堋ｩ窶堙ｨ when I first visited Japan in 1967 on a student tour. That one is not exactly enka but from there I quickly moved on to enka especially when I was whiling away the hours in coffee shops or bars in later trips there.
But Tendo Yoshimi can make any song sound fantastic.
