Editing oddity

OH...and speaking of editing oddities...

What kind of possible problem could be the cause of the editing function to just completely disappear? Does anyone know? Help please....

The ability to edit your posts goes away after a period of time. (I believe 24 hours??) If you are having a problem with a newer post however, I am unsure of the problem.

Just how far back you can go I'm not sure, but that time restriction must have been lifted or softened. At least I've recently been able to edit/correct posts from 2-3 days prior.

Thanks for the response JimmySeal san. To be honest, without delving too much at the moment, it's not me, actually. Nevertheless it has happened. The editing function source itself is gone; period.

What possible type of mishap could cause such a thing, I really wonder?

so even your last post is unable to be edited?

Stupid question....are you sure that the user in question is still logged in?

Thanks again. The user in question has now gotten the edit function back. It may have disappeared when that posters PM function had totally disappeared. Both are back have been retrieved now. But I still want to know what had happened. How is it possible for a single poster to suddenly lose those functions--as though almost on purpose? MM

My thought on the matter was this:

Did/does the user have the "remember me" button checked on the login page? If not, then they may be logged out after making a post and therefore the edit fuction would not show up, nor would the PM functions. I just tried logging out and you can still read the threads, but of course these functions are now gone.

That's a good point, CC1. I'll see if I can get any information on that. It could solve the problem. Of course, at the same time, I have never messed with that 'remember me' button, and have never had any problem. I'll check it out myself. Thanks for that insight.

It is also of interest that the particular person has been a member of JREF even longer than I have and that a thread which had been started by that poster giving notice of the loss of the edit function actually disappeared for a while--spooky. I'll get back with you on those details. Thanks MM

Yeah, I'm not sure it could be the problem here...but ensuring I was properly logged in was the first point of inquiry Thomas launched when my PM unexpectedly went out a few months ago.

Thanks Elizabeth for your input. I mean you guys surely all know a lot more than I do. It's like, I was doing FORTRAN back in school. . . you know with all those punch cards and stuff... handing it all to the guys behind the counter and waiting some 15~20 minutes for them to get around to running it, then getting back a long sheet with an error loop in it. Back to the drawing board.
