'Drive My Car' wins Best International Film

Last Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts announced its nominations for the 94th Academy Awards. "Drive My Car" (2021) by director Hamaguchi Ryūsuke has been nominated in the categories "Best Film" and "Best International Film", while Hamaguchi can hope for an Oscar for "Best Director" and "Best Adapted Screenplay". The film won several awards at the 74th Cannes International Film Festival and received the Golden Globe for "Best Foreign Language Film" in early 2022.

In addition, the film enjoys numerous other film awards and nominations, including at the British Academy Film Awards, the Japanese Academy Film Prize and the Independent Spirit Awards. It is based on a short story by best-selling Japanese author Murakami Haruki, which appeared in the short story collection "Of Men Who Have No Wives" (2014). The 2022 Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, 27 March.

Any other men here have an issue being in a car when you are not the driver? Even as a police officer , I hated riding shotgun. My wife is a great driver , but I go nuts when there is a reason she has to drive me. Maybe in a country with so many taxies and buses to ride in , it's not an issue. I feel like a major control freak but can't break the feeling of being a passenger.

My wife loves to drive, I don't. Perfect match. I love the car used in the movie, an old Saab.

My favorite author. Read him in college long before I ever knew he was or would become a best-seller.
I want to see this movie so very much.

For what it's worth, I didn't all that much like the movie adaptation of Norwegian Wood (though the soundtrack was sublime), but Tony Takitani (with an incredible soundtrack by Ryuichi Sakamoto) is a work of brilliance.

One of my first cars was a Saab and I still have fond memories of it.

As for me, I don't dislike driving but I don't like places in the U.S. and otherwise where it is a mandatory part of life.
In an ideal world, driving should be for leisure, and you should be able to live and buy basic necessities walking, biking, etc., and interacting with your neighborhood and community.

Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi's "Drive My Car" won the Academy Award for best international film on Sunday in Los Angeles, the second time for a Japanese film to win the award.

The brooding three-hour drama, based on a short story of the same name by author Haruki Murakami, was also nominated for best director, best adapted screenplay and best picture, the first time a Japanese film had been nominated for best picture. The film features a widower, portrayed by Hidetoshi Nishijima, who faces his grief and finds solace in a female chauffeur (Toko Miura) after his wife dies while leaving behind secrets. The last time a Japanese movie won in the best international film category was in 2009, when Yojiro Takita's "Departures" took home the prize. "Drive My Car" had garnered a host of prestigious awards even prior to its Oscar win.

Now this is interesting news, one more Oscars for Japan！Also, not common it having nomination for best picture (I guess it is the first time actually?)

Japan standing strong with its pop culture, awesome, btw I expected Demon Slayer to have at least ONE nomination at all, but it didnt happen (shouldnt be surprised, Oscars follows the same formulas for nominating and awarding), but this movie that Id never heard of won an Oscars and several nominations in many awards around the globe, thats good news

A question though.... will it be available on streaming at all？I suppose not so soon
