OOOOH!!! Keiichi Tsuchiya is named The Drift King for a good reason. I hear he has numerous cars but I dunno for sure. All I know is that he has a Toyota Trueno GT-Apex panda, with a carbon fibre hood. The parts and money spent on it, I have no clue. When I even saw him on a TV show, his Trueno was putting out a whopping 160 HP. But even with a simple 160 horsepower, being quite a bit for a Trueno, he still beat another Trueno and a Nissan GT-R34 skyline. That's like a 280 HP to 160... more than 100 horsepower difference.. it leaves me jaw dropped to this day. So owning. and since this is a thread about drifting, I'll add this. Right now, I'm saving up for a 1989 240SX just because it's the closest thing to an S13 I can get in the USA. And after that, a bit more spent into it.. woohoo... I still won't be big, but I'll most likely be on da hills and local courses trying to learn how to drift.. then, 8 years later, I'll be in the papers as the kid that died trying to drift down a mountain pass. ownage—rights yosh. Now I got for a break.

I would drift but I just fixed my car (broken timing chain) and Im having idle probems...that I have yet to fix. Plus the LSD I ordered is still in the mail. LOL

I think what he means is drifters give all types of racing a bad name, because of the simple fact that it's a lot easier to loose control and wipe out, hurt somebody, and damage someone elses stuff. It's just simpe dragers vs. drifters war stuff. I myself like straight line speed with a well tuned suspension.

What I mean is if people want to behave like jackasses behind the wheel, then they should do so off the public roadways. If you guys do your thing off the public roadways, then more power to you.
My work takes me to the Ooi Wharf area of Tokyo practically every day. Since it is largely deserted of passenger car traffic in the evenings, it is a popular place for drifters to gather. Unfortunately, a lack of passenger cars does not mean that it is a safe place for the activity or that they are endangering no one. There is lots of truck traffic, and lots of truck drivers who have arrived in the wee hours of the morning to line up waiting for the docks to open. All the hell I need is for some self-centered drift freak to slam into my truck some night. These idiots endanger the lives and livelihoods of others, and don't give a damn if they do.

The same state would be:
Drifting is relatively save compared to sitting on the tracks of Japan Railways with a towel around the head, walkman at full power - and awaiting the next Shinkansen to come through.....
Simply spoken: This is are both really stupid comparisions - and yours, topi, is only valid as long you do races at places that are closed to public traffic.
But in many cases downhill races are carried out on public roadways. It is not easy - IMHO impossible when the car is driven to the max - to catch a drifting car at full speed that's using the whole street while drifting - and get it back to lower speeds and on your own side in the case of oncoming traffic ......
And that means nothing more or less than risking killing of other people.......
I totally agree with mikecash.
We nearly lost a teammate in an accident that was caused by two "privat racers".... Several people died in this accident.
This happend on german "autobahn". The first racer came trough, the second car slammed into the loaded trailer of the truck that my teammate drove at a speed of nearly 200 km/h.....
The truck hurled across the whole street - another car slammed in (two dead) - and the truck crashed into a steel bridge carrying traffic signs. The bridge collapsed and fell down to (the other side of) the autobahn, where three cars hit the bridge at full speed (three dead).
This example in fact doesn't have much to do with drifting at downhill races on public roadways, as crashing into several cars at the same accident would occur pretty seldom - as there is not much traffic there.....

SBV, just in case you don't know, the "C1" he mentioned is the central loop of the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway. The maximum speed limit anywhere on that expressway is 60kph, by the way.
The C1 has numerous curves, many with very restricted visibility ahead (very, very restricted in places), many tunnels, many entrance/exit ramps, many places where traffic must merge (both from the left and the right, and some of them inside tunnels), and there are a few places where there is a bridge support between the lanes (without guard rails).
Does that mean you're no longer in Japan and you finished writing that book?

It seems to me that they do give a damn. They chose a deserted spot which they think is low risk to public harm.
Now, if somebody has told them to move along and stop drifting around the area, its a different story.

There are lots of trucks going in, out, and through there 24 hours a day. I know some people don't give a **** about the truck drivers, but since I'm one of them, I do.
The road traffic laws apply 24 hours a day, and drifting is illegal. Moreover, that area is clearly posted to be off-limits to people having no business in the area ("I wanna drift, dooood!!!!!" doesn't count as having business there) during the hours of their activity. There are signs clearly prohibiting drifting in the area as well.
And it isn't up to their judgment, the poor quality of which is evidenced by their choice of hobby, to decide which public roadway is "relatively" safe for them to endanger the lives and livelihoods of others.

I feel that so long as I show that sort of moderation in my illegal activities, then it isn't bothering or endangering anyone, and society should bugger off and leave it up to my sole judgment to make the decision to do those things.
