This is my first post on JREF, I'm really happy to be here. Recently, I became really good friends with a guy named Tomoharu from Setaguya-ku, Tokyo. I've always been interested in all things Japanese but meeting him really brought me closer to the Japanese language and culture. He's gone back to live in Tokyo now, but we still keep in touch and I'm still carrying on with the Japanese!

"Shinnen Akemashite Omedeto" is "Happy new year".
"Kotoshimo Yoroshiku" means "I want to become more friendly with you".
"Mochiron Zutto tomodachidaze!!" is "of course we are friends forever".

Shinnen Akemashite Omedeto.= (common way of saying) Happy New Year.
Kotoshimo Yoroshiku.= there's no direct translation for this one, i suppose.
Kotoshimo means "also this year" and Yoroshiku is very hard to translate, indeed... it means something like "I hope to see more of you" or in this case, it might just mean "let's keep in touch also this year".
Mochiron = Ofcourse
Zutto = always, for ever
Tomodachidaze!! = We are friends!!

Putting them together....

"Happy New Year. Let's keep in touch also this year. Ofcourse we will be always friends!!"

How about this?? I know it sounds a bit unnatural in English...

The more natural English needs something like "Kyonen osewa ni narimashita. Kotoshimo....." and maybe this is smoother Japanese as well.

I'll tell you all about my country; Wales ウェールズ (waieruzu) in Japanese. It's one of four countries that make up the United Kingdom. Check out this map.

A lot of foreigners often forget about Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and confuse the name 'Great Britain' with 'England'. This is understandable, since it is the largest country and is more internationally renowned than the other three.

We have a population of about 6 million. Like England, the population is mostly white and a mixture of protestants and catholics. In Wales, the chapel is considered to be more important than the church. I live in the north-east of Wales, in a place called Wrexham where we have a magnificent church that was built in the 12th century. Here's a pic:

We also have our own language; Welsh, which I can speak fluently. In Wales, it's compulsory for children to learn Welsh from, ages 4-16. Unfortunately, only about 10% of the population speaks Welsh, so it's considered to be a minority language in Great Britain. I'm really proud to speak Welsh, though I never get the chance to use it since my family chose not to carry on learning it after they left school. Never mind. If you'd like to learn some Welsh, just let me know. It'd be a pleasure to teach you.

Like Ireland and Scotland, Wales is what we call a Celtic country. Our history stretches back hundreds and hundreds of years. We have a unique culture based on folk songs and tales, dance and costume.
Our national flower is the daffodil and our flag is the red dragon on a white and green background. The white represents the purity of the people, the green represents the land and prosperity. The dragon itself represents an old myth; that the red dragon of Wales once defeated the white dragon of England.

Our capital city is Cardiff, located in the south.
