Hi all! I'm a Canadian diplomat who may be posted to the Canadian Embassy, located in Akasaka district of Tokyo. I understand this to be a fairly high-end neighbourhood and I'm assuming my assigned residence will be quite close to the Embassy.

I'm hoping to bring my 7-year-old black lab, who likes above all to fetch tennis balls, on land and water (not something that can be done on a leash). She's extremely well-behaved, although she does like to say "hi" to people, in particular if they have a dog themselves.

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some ideas as to what I'll need to know about dogs in Tokyo, and in particular in Akasaka. Are there going to be places where she can run and fetch?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice and insights.

The very, very long area along the banks of the Arakawa have lots of parks and sports fields. I have often seen people walking their dogs there. Probably not terribly convenient from Akasaka, but if you have a car it should be no trouble to take your dog over there and have a good time romping around and meeting folks.

I live next to the Arakawa river (Kawaguchi, nice place) and what Mike says is right. I often see people walking their dogs off the leash, but thats mainly smaller dogs. Something like a lab would have to be very obedient, or on a leash most of the time.

(I'm sure if its quiet you could let her loose in a park if no-one is there, its not uncommon for me to see people doing it around where I live).

Thanks for the info!

I'm sure it will all work out... she's an older, very well-behaved lab who loves to swim.

Residential area around Akasaka is really nice and you shouldn't have any problem walking your dog. There seems to be some privately-run dog runs in Tokyo and its surrounding area.

Have you gone through the Japanese quarantine requirements? The whole process takes more than 7 months. It's a pain, but if you are prepared, your dog can enter Japan right away.

See if I can post a link to the official information on importing pets:
