My point is this thread is pointless, and the topic is hardly worth arguing over. Telling white people to pay NHK is pointless. Even if the average Japanese knew which gaijin did and didn't pay their NHK broadcast fee, they would still be seen upon in the same gaijin spotlight.

Japan is much more enjoyable when you realize it's not going to change...especially b/c of something you do or don't do. Want to set a good example? Be the best gaijin there is: the one that minds his own business.

May quite well be decent advice I must agree with what Dave wrote in his post as well. It's the little things that add up to create an "image" and as most people know it is sure a hell of a lot easier, unfortunately as well, to remember the bad things that people do vs the good.

Very true Obeika. No matter who the person is they can do 10 good things and one bad. yet everyone remembers the bad thing more then the 10 all together.

I dont get that statement either. does that mean that only white people dont pay the NHK fee or is it what i think you meant and just took all gaijins as white? well what i hope you meant.

gaijin = white. It's somewhat of a joke, but not entirely untrue. You can ponder it all you want, but you'd be thinking about it way too much. It's just light humor. If you missed it the first time, just blow it off.

Realise this, the negative things that "gaijins" do, DO have a direct impact on our lives

There are for more useful things you could do to set a good example. How do Japanese people know foreigners don't pay NHK? Want to set an example, don't jay walk. Help an old lady when she's stuck. Go give your clothes to the homeless. Wait your turn in line. Give up your seat on the train, etc. etc. etc. If you guys were in a war, you'd die in the first battle as you'd be out of bullets (read: choose your battles). Probably wouldn't hurt to emotionally detach yourself from this thread, either. I'm not saying don't pay your NHK bill. Don't chastise others for not though. You are not your brother's keeper.

Your comments here are pretty condescending to say the least. AND even if you are a person of colour your comments could be taken as being racist.

Dont stress yourself too much because you probably are thinking too much about it.

Hmm... I don't think GaijinPunch was claiming that there are no non-white foreigners in Japan, merely that white people tend to be called to mind as a stereotypical foreigner when Japanese imagine the word "gaijin." I'm not sure exactly what that entails, but I do know that a lot of people here are taking this topic waaay too seriously. I would have never guessed that a topic about NHK could generate so much heated discussion!

There are more Asian foreigners who blend almost perfectly with the native Japanese that the remaining foreigners are the ones who stand out. And within that group the ones who are white Americans/Europeans.

Sure its racist, but its also how it seems to be in Japan.

Look I know that, however his comments are racist in nature. Whether or not if the stereotypical image is a gajin here in Japan is that of a "white" person that is off the mark. Refer to my previous post.;

Next you are only going to think that people are taking this topic too seriously if you are unfamiliar with the nature or the mindset of the Japanese people. If you are refering to mine or Dave's posts here as being too serious than I suggest that you walk a mile or two in our shoes before you critisize where we are coming from on this subject.

I am not suggesting that you accept blindly what we are saying, only to attempt to understand where we are coming from before you make a blanket statement like the one I quoted here.

Whether or not how it seems makes no difference, his previous post was racist in nature and condescending as hell. I also dont give a damn or not if his avatar is of a white man or not, that doesnt justify his arrogance in making the post that he did.

It's not my nature to be too bothered by things like this but when i read what you wrote i thought "this guy better be white"
At the end of the day if you had used the same thing but changed "white" with "black" im sure alot more people would of thought that the comment was racist.
I think the comment is more simular in offensive to saying "the black population of a jail" rather then a record store.

I really love the double standards we create in the world. Black people can run around and say the N word all day long. I say "white", and everyone gets their panties all bunched up. If you can't connect the dots between the two, tilt your head up, and back really far. You might catch it as it obviously went way over your head.

Just so there is no misunderstanding for those that havnt seen my picture Im also white and my point is you wouldnt say something like this about another ethnic so dont do it with your own also. The reason black people use the N word with each other is completely different and for the record i also dont agree with that either. Its not that you said "white" its the reference in which you mentioned it. In your place it may be Ok for others to call everyone whitey but just in case it hasnt been noticed this is the internet not hawaii. Where i live alot of people call each other the N word but its not a trend that I'm going to throw about on the net especially with people i dont know on a personal level. i think the reason a few are annoyed isnt that you used the word white but the generalization in which you used it.

The word "white" itself (referring to a group of people)? That's beyond my comprehension at the moment. I'm going to need someone to explain to me why that's so awful. Or tell me that I'm misunderstanding this whole situation.
