Actually, this kept bugging me after I posted it. I never learned this via a text - just through hearing it used over and over. And we all know how reliable that can be...Elizabeth said:今すわっているところのあの男
I don't know about its redundancy, but this reads to me like the man that was just sitting down (as in had just sat down). A bit odd without adding a main
verb 今、男の人が、すわっているところを見ました。 (I saw the man just as he was sitting down ?)
Anyway, I looked up the difference between Verb+ているところ and Verb+ところ, and this is what I got:
帰っているところ - I am currently returning home.
帰るところ - I am just about to return home.
Thing is, I've always heard people on the bus or train using 帰るところ - so it seems like the border between 'currently' and 'just about to' can be blurry.
