I have heard stories told by elderly Okinawan people that ate field rats and mice as meat subsitutes during the occupation by Japanese Imperial Troops leading up to, during, and after the Battle of Okinawa during WWII. People here were subject to eating all different types of "food" that today would turn the stomachs of just about all people writing here, including me.
There is a soba-ya in northern Okinawa that was also famous at one time for using cat meat as the "soup-base" many, many, many years ago.
