Native Japanese people whom I have helped out in the past please help me out.

First, some background material for others:

Look at the number 1,000,000.

Now quick, what number is that in English?

It's one million, of course. It's easy to see that because there's a one followed by three zeros, a comma, and three more zeros. From the RIGHT side, the first three digits represent numbers 1 to 999; a comma, then the next three digits represent the thousands, tens of thousands, and hundreds of thousands, respectively; another comma, and the next three digits represent the millions; and so on. It's an easy system in the west.

In Japanese, on the other hand, it's a nightmare, because the numbers don't work in sucession of three digits separated by commas, even though THEY DO USE a comma between every three darn digits! I still have trouble with very large numbers--pull what ever little hair I have left. 😌

1 thru 10 are ichi, ni, san, . . . , ju.

20, 30, 40, etc. are ni-ju, san-ju, yon -ju, etc.

100 is hyaku

1,000 is sen (issen= ichi + sen)

But what is 10,000? It's NOT ju-sen.

Ten thousand is simply called "man" or ichi-man.

100,000 is ju-man (ten times ten-thousand),

1,000,000 (one million) is hyaku-man (hundred x ten-thousand), and

10,000,000 (ten million) is issen-man (one thousand x ten-thousand)

You still with me? You can't have an "ichi-man man" ("man man" - repeat of a unit), so

100,000,000 (one hundred million) is the next unit called "oku" or "ichi oku"

1,000,000,000 (one billion) is ju oku (i.e., 10 x oku),

10,000,000,000 is hyaku oku (100 x oku),

100,000,000,000 is issen oku (1,000 x oku), and

you would expect the next unit to be called "ichi man oku" for 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion)

NOW here's what I'm having trouble with . . .

The dictionary says 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion) is the next unit called "chou".

But I can swear I have heard Japanese people say "[so and so] man oku."

Is "______ man oku" a valid unit, before going up to "chou"?

It's probably close to "thousand million" in English, not that I'm a fan of that. But I guess that it's a way to help people conceptualize large numbers, because after a while we start to lose any ideas of what they mean. What exactly is one hundred vigintillion?

It's settled. There's no "man oku".

I was watching an old episode of "Project X" about the Japanese "Tron" operating system, and it was mentioned that Bill Gates's net worth is "4 Chou Yen" (at the time this episode was produced). He's worth about $40 billion, so I did some quick calculation:

1 oku Yen = $1 million
10 oku Yen = $10 million
100 oku Yen = $100 million
1000 oku Yen = $1 billion
4000 oku Yen = $4 billion

Then if $40 billion is "4 Chou Yen" then there's no "40,000 oku Yen" and no "Man Oku"

Thanks!

Change the commas to every 4 places instead of every 3, then try reading them.

For more fun, try that with your Japanese friends. Write some ridiculously long number, with commas every 3 places, and ask them to read it. Watch them use their finger to count off positions. Then write the same number with commas every 4 places and have them try it.

mikecash? You wouldn't be the same as the Mike Cash from the old Maktos forum, would you?

Don't be silly. It's the mikecash from sci.lang.japan :D :D

Is joke.

I like Paul's way better. It's less shameful.

What's so shameful about the old Maktos forum? It had its uses. :D :D The shiritori thread was pretty killer, eh? :D :D

The old Maktos forum was only useful if one printed it out on very soft two-ply paper.

Yep, that's the Mike Cash that I know, too! :D :D

That's me, the little gray cloud who floats about raining on everyone's parade.

Here are units of large number. Have a fun.

Can't resist: A googol might be large, but look, it isn't that huge
10 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000

A googolplex, that is huge 👍

Eh, it's big enough. A googolplex, eh? I remember reading that no one could write that out in one lifetime. That's ridiculously large. *(googolplex - a googol raised to the power of a googol).

What about really small numbers? Like units in centi, milli, nano, pico, femto, etc. That info would be useful for me at least :D

OK, Roots. Here are unit names of small numbers. :-)
I've found this on the Web, and I noticed that some of the unit name
are sometimes used to express smallness. It's interesting for me.

Oh, I see! I didn't know what "j/k" is at all.
I don't mind at all. Don't worry, Roots!
And thank you, Glenn! :)
