Travel Cost of travelling to Japan for about two weeks?

So, I am planning on doing a Year in Asia exchange program at university in about three years but I want to travel to Japan first as I want to get a feel for it before I commit. I honestly love so many things about Japan but I want to know how everything works before I get over there and find out I have absolutely no idea how to use a train ticket machine ^_^;; so if you've travelled there before for two weeks or anything like that, please share your experiences!! thank you for reading my post >///< ありがとうございました‼︎ 未来夢!!

I travelled to Japan for two weeks during Summer 2015. The money I spent whilst in Japan was roughly £600 (maybe a little more). I didn't go on big shopping sprees, but did eat out everyday in decent restaurants.

The route I took was Tokyo,Hakone,Kyoto ,Hiroshima, Osaka. I purchased a Japan rail pass which was worth the money.

I stayed in 3*/4* hotels in city centre locations and travelled at a peak summer time, during Obon week.

The total cost of my trip was pretty high to be honest, as I also had a travel company arrange things. But I dont regret it as Japan was a brilliant country to travel in!

I think women tend to spend a bit more than men, but I think this estimate is fair:
- hostel: 3000 yen per night
- hotel: 5000 - 8000 yen per night
- 3000 yen per day on food and drinks (less is certainly possible, but this would give you lots of options)
- transport within Tokyo: 1000 yen per day (unlimited) or 500 if you just go from A to B and back
- 1 week rail pass 30.000 yen, if you plan on spontaneously traveling around a bit. You could also take LCC flights for about 5000 - 8000 per leg.

Add cost of flight and shopping money, and there you are.

My first trip to Japan in 2009 cost me about about €930 for the flight which was direct from Munich. I stayed half of the time in a Ryokan in the Nagano area for about €590 all inclusive and the other half in a business hotel in Shinjuku for about €46/night.
For souvenirs and food (almost exclusively restaurants) and other shopping I spent about €600 during my time in Tokyo.
Since then I went three more trips, ranging from 10 to 30 days. I had one-stop flights for between 500 and 630 Euro and spent less than €500 every time, because I was able to stay at a Japanese family for free. So if you have any friends living in Japan, this may be an option to lower your expenses tremendously.
