The Japanese government decided to allow prefectural governments to declare precautionary steps against the spread of the highly transmissible BA.5 Omicron subvariant of the coronavirus.
Under the policy, aimed at focusing on the elderly and those with underlying conditions putting them at high risk, prefectural governments facing strains on their medical systems will urge such residents to refrain from going out as much as possible and for the public to receive COVID-19 vaccinations, according to officials.
The announcement came a day after Japan's daily cases topped 230,000, marking a new record for the second consecutive day, amid the seventh wave of the pandemic.
