This is interesting. It uses "irasshaimasu." I've no idea why this is used. "irrasshaimasu" means "Welcome" or "Please come again." (something like that) whe you enter a store. Hmm.

Bucko's method to remember doesn't use the plain form verb ending, i.e. the ku in kaku. It uses the stem ending, i.e. kaku => kaki.

-te form irrashaimasu is a different level of Japanese. I wouldn't worry about it right now. It's a beast of a different color that challenges people further along than you.

What I was trying to say was you CAN MAKE IT POLITE by adding "imasu", "Iru" etc.

Adding imasu/iru to a -te form verb does not make it polite, it changes the meaning.

Using multiple verbs in one sentence is a different lesson entirely.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. The uses of the -te form are pretty universal for all verbs. If you know how to use one, you can use them all...☝

asobu wa shite imasen deshita = "as for play, it wasn't doing". Makes no sense at all hey.

Think about it GCL, "I didn't play". It's in the past tense, "play" is the verb, so make the verb "play" into past tense. You know how to do it!

asobu = plain form "play"
asobimasen = polite form "don't play"
asobimasen deshita = polite form "didn't play"

So the sentence you're looking for is "watashi wa asobimasen deshita", "I didn't play".

Once I know how to conjugate verbs to the ~te form, what makes it so hard to learn? Is it the idioms? The phrases only japanese language has? Alternating on/kun readings on kanji in a compound kanji?

Oh yeah. Is there any japanese word like "That's it!". In english, it means "That's it!" like you have an idea, or in agreement with someone on an idea.

What Kumo's saying is that you aren't developing a well-rounded and thorough knowledge of the concepts. You're going through them very quickly without any real practice, and shooting questions at random topics when you should focus on the basics first. Like people have said, slow down, read every post (and link), and practice what you've learned.

It's like learning to play basketball, but only learning how to shoot and what traveling is. Without the rest of the knowledge, your game will be neither complete nor sufficient.

It has nothing to do with being nice or not, it's about being realistic.
Just forget about the ~te-form. Actually, don't even think about verbs right now. You really need to understand some basic grammar points before starting with that. Go and review them.

yomimasen (base + masen): Polite form of to read

Ni, has many uses, including to show direction.

e, by means of, among others.

no, possessive

wa topic marker

ga subject marker

to (can mean 'and' among other things)

wo (object marker)

I've always had trouble with reading comprehension.

Ever since I was very young. I was in special ed all the way from early middle school to high school.

Alot of simple japanese sentences are easy but I tend to make it harder then they are.

Trust us. you have been having a problem with the -te form. An important part of self study is being able to identify what you having trouble with. Its also not being ashamed to admit when you are having a problem with something. Its also not driving eveyone on this board crazy.

If some of you arent interested in helping GCL, or are getting frustrated at doing so - simply walk away. Much better than creating an acrimonious environment where you're browbeating him because of his impatience.

GCL - you ARE going too fast, and (in my opinion) are trying to learn verb conjugations OUT of a logical order, and are only confusing yourself because of it, for example trying to learn "-ta" "-te" conjugations together, when really learning Te-forms of verbs first makes learning the Ta-form and subsequent conjugates/sentence expressions based on Ta-form easier.

Right now you're trying to learn "Dirty Japanese". Learning Japanese in a PROPER way, only helps to reinforce what you learn next. If your goal is just to be able to quickly play Japanese games - its NOT going to happen in no 6 months mate. I remember going to Japan and listeining to this 5 year old, and I could almost understand everything he said, but it pretty much beat home the fact that in order to be proficient in this language - youre going to have to resolve yourself to studying for a long time. And not just studying, but studying intelligently and thoroughly.

NO instructor with half a brain would EVER think to learn all verb conjugates at once, so why are you. My recommended order (after you get yanno basic writing and reading down) for your level:

Present-Tense, Affirmative Polite Form (-masu).
Present-Tense, Negative Polite Form (-masen)
Past-Tense, Affirmative Polite Form (-mashita).
Past-Tense, Negative Polite Form (-masen deshita)
Te-Form of Verbs
Present-Tense, Affirmative Informal Form (Dictionary Form of verb)
Present-Tense, Negative Informal Form (-nai)
Past-Tense, Affirmative Informal Form (-ta, same as -te, just drop E add A)
Past-Tense, Negative Informal FOrm (-nakatta)

You can worry about potentials, transitives, honorifics (Oy for when this young man gets there and comes here) much, much MUCH later.

So you know - without thinking, the Te-forms of all "U verbs"? What about ADJECTIVES - all this talking about verbs, are you comfortable conjugating ADJECTIVES?

THe problem I'm having here is knowing how to conjugate a verb, and to what. Do I just have to memorize it, or do they have rules?
For example:
会 う あ う au (to meet)
会 わ あ わ awa Base 1
会 い あ い ai Base 2
会 う あ う au Base 3
会 え あ え ae Base 4
会 お う あ お う aou Base 5
会 っ て あ っ て atte Base "te"
会 っ た あ っ た atta Base "ta"
That's great and all, but they wanted me to conjugate it starting with au. Great, I can drop the u to awa, I know how to do that. But it doesn't say to drop the "u" and add "I' for base 2, also for base 4, "ae" it doesn't end in "ba". It said the base 4's end in ba.
This is really confusing.

Those are normally introduced one at a time, with the expectation that one will do lots of practice drills and internalize the formation of each one before learning the next one. You're not supposed to get them all at once.

I don't have all of the "u" verbs for the te forms conjugated. "shite" still confuses me for some reason. It means "did", or maybe "to do". It's related to suru.
Do you think I've made any progress though, Wheat thins?
No, I don't know how to conjugate adjectives yet. should I know how?

Well I have a japanese book, 2. Both are for conversational. Should I read those and start with page 1?
Also, that video "I am yan." You know why it sometimes upsets me? It doesn't explain the grammar or why, it just tells you how to say it.

If I keep studying this hard for years, will I be ablet o understand it better eventually, mayb eeveen read japanese video games eventually? Or if I live there?

I get adjectives/nouns etc confused alot because its a completely different language from english.
