I am learning and practicing some kanji and am running into some difficulty in using the following characters:
(1) I am trying to understand how to use the kanji for compassion (I don't understand the difference):
慈悲 じひ - mercy/compassion
同情 どうじょう - sympathy/compassion
仁 じん - benevolence/compassion
爱心 あんしん- loving heart/compassion
仁德 じんとく - kind-hearted/benevolent/compassion
I also find the following confusing:
(2) - I am also trying to understand the kanji used in conjunction with 愛 あい (love) and trying to figure out if there is kanji for "soulmate"
愛慕 あいぼ - adoring love (something one feels for your sister/mother?)
熱愛 ねつあい - passionate love (lust?)
真愛 しんあい - true/real/genuine love (something you feel for your spouse?)
永遠の愛 えいえんのあい - eternal love (something you feel for your spouse?)
(3) Lastly - I heard from another student that there is a specific phrase or kanji used in Japanese to refer to someone who loves animals (not in the physical way!) like a "dog lover" - can anyone shed some light on this? My friend works in an animal rescue shelter and would like to have a tattoo designed using this - if it exists

It would be helpful if you could give us the sentence or situation where you want to use the word "compassion".

Would it be "心の友" or "親友" (or "まぶだち")?

"a dog lover" = "愛犬家"
But, I'm not sure how to say an "animal lover". Would it be "動物好き(ずき)"?
 
Is this all for a tattoo?? I just do not see any practical use for any of the words mentioned in the OP. At least for anyone who is casually learning/practicing kanji. ☝

Glenn san, you are amazing!! How did you notice that was jiantizi?

!?...I also found "德" is Hanzi. Kanji is 徳, right?
 
Nice catch! That one slipped by me.

What can I say, I have an interest in 漢字/汉字 (although I really dislike the latter, i.e., 簡體字/简体字/簡体字), so I tend to pay more attention to them than your average person (whatever that means, lol).
 
Yeah. I'm still uncomfortable with Jiantizi and always forget how to write. The only character I'm comfortable is 间. Partially it's similar to what ryakuji writing style (略字 - Wikipedia) in Japanese. I always hesitate writing characters like 马 and 车. Beside I don't know what the well-proportioned shape for these characters should look like.
I enjoy comparing Japanese kanji and Chinese Fantizi, though. In fact, I made a file like this View attachment 7660.

Yeah, the simplified characters feel really strange to write to me too, particularly 发. I'm much more comfortable with either 発 or 發. Of course, 专 is pretty strange to write as well (much prefer either 專 or 専). I like comparing them too, but not enough to make a file.

I guess I forgot to mention that I am a beginner so I cannot follow the conversation too well as I need some kana with the kanji to follow it when it is not familiar, I only know very basic daily use stuff as i lived in Kansai when i was a kid but over the years I have forgotten so many - and the problem is I cannot make a sentence because I have no idea how to use these words - that is what I need help with.

I do not recall my parents (who are Japanese but are deceased) ever using these kind of words, and I understand English better than Japanese now - so I guess I am trying to just understand my forgotten native language better ^^

Sorry for using the wrong character I have to cut and paste from other sites and it is so small I didn't even notice it was different.

I actually got around to reading through those (at work ) today, and they are interesting. I like that 知恵 used to be 智慧 -- both characters were replaced. I knew about some of the ones on the list. It brings to mind 截断 for 切断 (just came to me just now).

I also like that it talks about one of my main complaints with the replacement usage of some characters: they make absolutely no sense when you look at their meanings, whereas the character they're replacing makes perfect sense (and in many cases is only different by the addition of a radical, e.g., 厳然→儼然; or even a less complex radical, e.g., 講和→媾和). Those may not be the best examples, but I know that there are really good ones out there to illustrate the point; I just can't think of them now.

Anyway, thanks for posting -- I enjoyed the break from work!
