I know nothing of Cuban cigars, having never had one.
I do know that one can import cigars from the US, something I have done numerous times, although at the moment my humidors are running a bit low. I have a box of Joya de Nicaragua that I laid down two years ago. I may start smoking them in another three years or so. Nice to let them rest, you know.
My favorite source for cigars is
Lynn Cigars. Larry Lynn is a good man with a range of good products, from the budget-minded dog rockets to the more high end premium brands. Good service, and he won't screw you on the shipping.
The hard thing is to find a place which will ship outside the US. I know of and have used a couple of others, but I won't bother to mention them here since I can't in good conscience recommend them over Larry Lynn.
He carries a small assortment of humidors, cutters, lighters, and other assorted paraphernalia. You needn't have a humidor right away, since you can get by with a "coolerdor" (a camp cooler pressed into service as a humidor). You
should, however, if you go that route at least get some humidifier bricks and a bottle of humidifier solution to put in there to regulate the environment. A hygrometer is also recommended. Fortunately, these are all low cost items. Lynn's humidors are nice and serviceable, but if you wish to build up a large stock you may wish to look elsewhere for larger capacity humidors. I can give you a pointer toward a source for those if you need it.
Personally, I favor Nicaraguan cigars. For something that you can stick a match to on a more frequent basis without worrying about your wallet, take a look at the Flor de Oliva line. (I like the torpedos). I save the Joya de Nicaragua for special times. The El Credito brand is good, basically being seconds of the La Gloria Cubana. Some sizes of the Consuegra line are quite good, with the #9 maduro being a very modestly priced cigar appreciated for its quality even by folks who can afford the premium brands. Lay a bundle or two of those down and let them rest a few months and you'll not be disappointed.
