Chinese and Japanese cultures are essentially different

all Korean speaker knows that the closest language to them is the cantonese, but westerners insist they are completely different.

You are confusing a language in its pure form with a language's loan words. Korean borrowed a substantial number of words from Chinese. This in and of itself does not make Korean related to Chinese or any particular dialect of Chinese.
 
People like Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore used to tell Americans China called itself "The Middle Kingdom" implying it has been calling itself that way for millennium arrogantly. In fact China only started to call itself "中国" (The Middle Country) in the 1900 after the collapse of the Qing Dynasty. Here I just like to clear things up a bit.

The similarities between Japan and China are :

- Look at the similarity of features it is very likely that Japanese are ancient peoples migrated from Korean peninsula or Eastern China to the islands of Japan. Some Japanese may think Jofuku (徐福) and his followers are their ancestors.
