okay so the majority of people on here know me pretty well.

i dont' know what i want to do!!!!!


the things i'm choosing between.

law-i want to be able to speak up for the people that can't speak up for themselves. i want to help people everyday. i dont' know what i want to do but i'm pretty sure i want to be a lawyer. maybe if not that a detective. I just want to be someone who's looked up to

on the other hand

cosmetology- i want to do it ALL!! hair,nails,make-up,massage therapy. i mean its also a job where you help people feel good about themselves! i want to be able to be creative and express myself!

i'm lost and there is no happy medium. i just need someone to listen lol so ignore me if you must

Maybe not fair but....

probably your grades , SAT scores, financial situation would have some effect on going to college. Are you really in the mood for jumping right into college and heavy duty studies? You strike me as a girl who enjoys life(party animal,LOL); law school might bore you to death. I'd say go for RN nurse; lots of different areas you can go into and big money to made and guaranteeded job security. Also have RN's who travel everywhere, all expences paid. Better pick something you think you might enjoy and can live with.

see. but i dont' want to work like that i mean just between law and cosmetology. i mean i could do both if iwanted but being a mary-kay salesperson will get me a butt load of money too.

Oh and I think you should go for the cosmetics thing, that would suit you best of what I have seen so far from you in characteristics as Uncle Frank stated some of those so well.

From my point of view law is boring and also the fact that I think most governments and laws fail to bring real justice. I see you rather tattle all day long with a bunch of ladies wearing purple, green, pink and many other flashy colored products and nice smelling perfumes ^_^

also, remeber that if you love doing something, it does not guarantee you will love doing it for 40 hours a week and because you now HAVE to do it...I love riding horses, but when I was paid to ride other peoples horses it became a job and it literally sucked all of the fun out of it!

lol yeah i know it seems like i'd be great doing that. and it's such a creative job. however goldie your right idon't know if i'dlike it fourty hours a week. but i'm going to be trying to make it big like gwen stefani big! i want to do famous peoples make-up and hair and nails

I think being a lawyer can be a pretty big challenge to get through university because some of the facts you need to know are just so uninteresting and you only need them to be able to do your exams.
I'm not sure about what it's like in america but in Germany and I think in most of the rest of Europe you need to do 1 or 2 semesters of latin and ancient law cases envolving cicero and so on.

If you don't know what to do, than I would suggest you to take a year off, go traveling, see the world and find out what you want to do?

I went to Australia for 9 months, because I did not knew what to do, wanted to have a break from school, and wanted to learn more about myself (didn't got a carreer though, but I am happy).

I can't recommend studying law, because I've got plenty of friends who do or did it and - despite of many people's expectations it's absolutely no guarantee for a job. Imagine you manage to keep a stiff upper lip all time long and end up as a law teacher in high school



I was in the same dilemma some months ago.

Now I've decided to put an end to my exciting time as a paramedic and ambulance driver and applied for medschool.

I really look forward to my time as a college student. Yay

I think my signature says it all MrsAmberface, but it has to be something you truly enjoy and would do for free if you could afford it.

In my case I wanted to be a big time business man or have my own business and I succeeded in that by having my own school in Japan. I enjoyed it very much, but the boom economy of Japan with skyrocketing housing prices forced me to leave for the US where I knew I could at least afford a house.

When I came to the US I found a job at a Japanese company and was a "businessman" for 9 years and quite successful and rising steadily. But the stress and travelling started to take it's toll on me and after three years I hated it, but stayed with it because the money and prestige was good. I dreaded going to work everyday and the only real joy I had was when I went to Japan on business where I would take a few days off to visit friends and relatives.

In both cases I enjoyed driving and would drive for hours both in Japan and the US on my time off as it was relaxing. Sometimes for days or weeks at a time during vacation. It was something that I throughly enjoyed and wished I could do permanently. Well I got that wish about 9 years ago when I was introduced to driving a truck for a living and one where I would be home on a regular basis and, after a while, on a daily basis. I would be doing something I enjoy and getting paid for it too!

My Japanese bosses thought I was crazy for, in their words, "throwing away a good career" and was probably too old, but I did it anyway because it was what I wanted to do. Others thought I was throwing away a good education, but I haven't look back since nor have I regretted it and I have never been happier in my life.

After nine years I still enjoy it and actually look forward to going to "work". To me it's not work. I get paid well to just drive for 8 hrs a day on the interstates and listen to the radio and music to my hearts content. Or I can just slip in a Japanese language CD and catch up on my Japanese for an hour or two. Since I drive at night traffic is light and I sometimes drive for three or more hours straight on cruise control before even touching the brake! No boss is breathing down my neck, no phones to answer, no meetings and no deadlines. I truly couldn't have found a better career for myself.

Granted, driving for a living is not for everyone, but for me it is and I am glad I made the decision to follow my heart and not what other people think I should do. Therefore, follow what is in your heart and do something you truly enjoy doing regardless of the pay and prestige. It may take you some years to find what it is you enjoy doing as it did me, but in the end it was worth it. Good luck!

One thing I would take into consideration when getting a job, even though it doesn't sound as important or glamorous as other aspects, is having good benefits and pention plan through the job.

There seems to be more corporations that offer a health insurance to even part-time employees in the US now, but when I was first trying to get a job 7 years ago, I remember being startled to find out not having a health insurance. I definitely wouldn't want to pay $500 for one hospital visit.

well. i think pachipro has just stolen my heart. i belive that what i want is to do hair. i want to travel the world, so law seemed so...right. i think i'll make law a side class. i enjoy law. i think it's a great area to know and i would love to do it for a living. because of the money. so cosmetology is where it's at for me. i mean. it seems so much better than law.

If you want to travel, get your bachelors degree... You can see lots of different places, just on that alone... Hell, you can even join the Peace Corps if you like. It's something that I wish someone would have told me to stick to when I was younger...

You can't look at every profession at it's ultimate nadir, I mean you can't say, I like music, so, I'm going to become a musician because the perks are: millions of dollars, lots of fans, rocking out on stage, having a good time!!!!1

It doesn't work out that way all the time... I'm not telling you to give up your dreams, I'm just telling you to try to balance your idealism with a little pragmatism.

Cosmetology may take you no further than the local strip mall, and it may be difficult for you to find work. Get a well rounded education, and you'll find that opportunities present themselves that hadn't been possible otherwise--- A person I know whom I lived with when I moved here was accepted as a teacher in Thailand, solely for his degree.

You're seventeen, you've got plenty of time in the world, even as Dutch Baka suggested, just to take some time off and think. If you're really deciding on a career, something your going to have to put time, money, and effort into, and something that may not yield some sort of accredited degree, take some time, enough time, more than a day, to decide on it.

It's your life, your future, you shouldn't rush your decision. You've got plenty of time to change your mind, several times.

yeah, i think a year sounds good. but like you said no decisions in a day. i'll never know until i get there. i'm leaning towards the year though ill get some time to think about things.

Cosmetology, massage therapy, nails, astheticians....though are a very fast growing area. Staying young looking and looking your best and well groomed is very important in todays world. I know that you can make a very good living from any of them. You can see the world...work on a cruise ship, work at a Disney resort. It's a great area for women to own their own business. You know my best friend went to cosmetology school in 1988 and it cost her (parents really!) $1,800 dollars; I just looked at the same school and it is $12,000 dollars! Wow! I was shocked. The price has increased so much because the demand has increased. There is even a waiting list to get into that school. So MrsAmberface, I say if that's what you want..DO IT...I went to college for years and have a useless education. I wish I would have went to cosmetology school...it's one year and your off an running! Plus, it is just one year, you can always go to college after and you can support yourself doing hair! VOILA! problem solved! hehehe!!

I think it's important to have a career that brings enjoyment to you. To paraphrase that old saying, "Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life". Words to live by I think!
