Can a canadian doctor work in Japan?

He's a friend of mine..He's not canadian but he's just finished his certification and his 5-year residency in Canada..
Strangely, he's working on his Japanese language, I don't wanna look as if I am putting him down, but I dunno, how will he get to work in Japan?
What's the needed steps? Is there an exam? where should he apply, then?

One word, "no". You will have to go through the 6 years of college here. I am currently studying in the hope that one day I will pass the entrance exam for being a Dr here(could be very difficult though). The entrance exam is beyond difficult to become a Dr here. I have two friends here (Japanese) that have taken the exam 6 times and failed and they ended up choosing another profession.

In reply to a few questions I have recieved I will post the requirments to become a Dr if you already have a licence. It is in Japanese.

Basically it is saying that you can circumvent the 6 years of schooling if pass a series of tests, all of which need to be carried out in order which could take some time, could be a few years to actualy pass the tests as they are only run once a year. These test are in Japanese and without a firm grasp on the Japanese language I will say that you have not a chance of passing them. It is not impossible but you need to be fluent in the language.

So yes it is illegal to practise as a Dr here in Japan without a Japanese licence.

I have heard of an exchange program , but it is limited to a few Dr's for the whole country and you are only allowed to see patients from your country not Japanese patients. (I also believe that it was the UK that had this agreement with Japan)

Ah and by the way, I think you misunderstood me when I said "Is it illegal for a foreign doctor to work if he's not a graduate of a japanese school of medicine?"...of course I wasn't speaking about being "Without License", I never thought of that..what I meant was being "Not A Graduate Of A Japanese College"...

Why do you find that strange? Have you asked him why he wants to be a doctor in Japan? Did he ask you to look into this for him?

-I didn't ask my friend about his researches on that subject, because I know it's not easy to work in Japan, especially as a doctor..so I didn't want him to think I am putting him down.
-I found it strange that he's working on his language, because I thought it was ILLEGAL for a doctor who wasn't graduated from a japanese medical school to work in Japan..So I believed his road was blocked, but now Dave changed my info.
Feel free to tell me any additional info..and by the way, I guess my friend's road isn't blocked now, true? I am even thinking of sharing his dream..

No, what I mean is that it sounds odd that you have not spoken to your friend at length about the issue you have brought up here on this thread.

If a friend of mine told me that she was studying Swahili so she would be able to work as a doctor in Kenya, I would be asking her many questions. I don't see how that would be taken as "putting her down".

○ 最近、卒業後に日本の医師国家試験の受験資格が得られる旨認可を厚生労働省から受けていること等を示して、外国の医科大学（医学部）・歯科大学（歯学部）への入学を勧誘する広告を行っている例が見受けられますが、厚生労働省は、外国の医学校を卒業した方から、医師国家試験の受験資格認定の申請があった後に、当該申請者個々人の能力や、当該申請者が受けた教育等を審査することとなっており、海外の医学校等に対し、当該医学部の卒業生への医師国家試験の受験資格を一律に認定することはありません。
○ このため、こうした海外の医学校等を卒業されても、日本の医師国家試験の受験資格が認められないことが十分想定されますのでご注意下さい。

Basically what the red writting is saying that foreign colleges are posting advertisments for soliciting students to join their college that once you have graduated you will be eligible to take the exam here to become a Doctor. But the Japanese government is warning people that they will not accept applicants unconditionaly just b/c they have graduated from a medical school and that things like your schooling history and your ability are examined and if you do not fit the profile you will not be eligible to take the exam.
I hope that clears that up.
