My question is..

About the use of ほど example:

今は知らない者がいないほど有名な作家である彼も、十年前は無名の新人だった。

The usage of ほど in this sentence would be roughly translated as?

It translates as the "so" in the following exchange:

Johnny Carson: It was so hot today...
Audience: How hot was it?
Johnny Carson: It was so hot today that Burger King was saying, "if you want it your way, cook it yourself."

I have thought about how to translate it but somehow I can never get it sounding right.

ほど is also translated as "to the extent that..."
今は知らない者がいないほど有名な作家である彼も、十年前は無名の新人だった。
Literal translation would be:
He, who is now a very famous author to the extent that there's no one who doesn't know him, was a new and unknown writer ten years ago.
