Tech Bridgestone develops puncture-proof tyre

Bridgestone has unveiled a groundbreaking innovation: a puncture-proof tyre. Dubbed Airfree, while still in development, this revolutionary concept promises to eliminate the age-old worry of flat tyres. The Airfree tyre relies on a unique design featuring plastic spokes that replace traditional air-filled tubes. These spokes, measuring just one centimetre thick, absorb road shocks, ensuring a smooth and reliable ride.

The immediate benefits of this technology are clear. Drivers can enjoy a maintenance-free driving experience without needing air pressure checks or puncture vulnerability. Initially, Bridgestone plans to introduce Airfree tyres for specialized vehicles like buses and low-speed electric vehicles. Often found in rural and urban communities, these vehicles will be the first to benefit from this innovative technology. Bridgestone aims to bring Airfree tyres to market in 2026.

On Oct. 24, Bridgestone invited officials from local governments that operate community buses to its testing course in Kodaira, western Tokyo, for a trial run. "The design and maintenance-free nature of the tyre is very appealing," said an official from the Toyama city government who took part. "I didn't find anything wrong, even when travelling at 50 kph." The tyre is painted in a thunder design of blue and white. Bridgestone hopes to expand the use of the tyres for small electric vehicles and trucks to improve ride comfort, reduce costs, and help recycle the tyres. As electric cars do not have to stop for gas at service stations, the absence of tyre maintenance makes Bridgestone's new tyre an attractive option for EV drivers.
