Japan bans S. Korean 'garbage dumplings'

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has halted all imports of South Korean dumplings following the outbreak of a case in South Korea in which businesses were found to be using "raw garbage" in dumplings.

The ministry has instructed quarantine stations across the country not to accept any dumplings, dumpling stuffing or Chinese-style meat buns imported from South Korea for an unspecified period.

If any products are found to have been imported, the ministry plans order recalls. The ministry took action after it was learned that old radish destined to be thrown away was being used in dumplings in South Korea.

South Korea's Food and Drug Administration said a food manufacturer was found to have supplied about 20 food companies with dumplings using pickled radish. The administration reportedly plans to release the names of firms involved.

The food manufacturer's actions first became known after it was reported on Monday that police placed the operators of the firm on a wanted list for accepting leftover radish scraps without payment from a company that produced pickled radish, and selling it for dumpling stuffing.

Between 2001 and 2004 this manufacturer had reportedly soaked pickled radish in water to remove the salt and sold it to major food manufacturers.

Figures held by the Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare show that last year 864 tons of frozen dumplings were imported into Japan. This year, as of Tuesday, the figure stood at 437 tons. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, June 10, 2004)

Gyouza is great, but raw garbage in them? What is the world coming to?

Oh, Man! For the past few days I had eaten Korean gyouzas (the frozen ones from supermarket) and instant noodles (kimichi flavored), I think I've finally risen to the pedestal of a true Junk Food Junkie ...

BlogD,

I am so impressed w/ your recipe of gyoza!
I make my own, too, but yours look much more professional, and delicious!

Thanks--my former girlfriend taught me. You might want to do a search on my blog for "gyoza" and read updates--like the use of cheese. I found that cheese was better used on top of the gyoza after they'd been cooked; put it inside and you don't even know its there.
