I am looking for reliable but cheap. My friends sent some stuff to Australia by boat and that took forever but was affordable. Anyone know any ways to ship somethings to the states at a reasonable price?

If you have a friend on one of the US bases, I believe they get domestic rates to ship to the states. Otherwise, short of sending it with a friend that is flying there, the cheapest option is the Japanese postal service. What are you thinking of sending, and how much does it weigh?

I am looking to send a couple boxes filled with clothes a few books a portable hard drive and a computer tower.

definitely would pay off to have a friend in the military, even by ship that's going to cost a fortune.

Are you flying home and sending this stuff ahead of yourself? If so you might be better off taking an extra check-in. Depends on the airline, but United charged me about 19,000 yen to take an extra suitcase up to 20kg, and you can bump your weight limit up to 30kg for an extra 3000 yen per bag. Way cheaper than other air-shipment services and the bags arrive with you. Without connections you can't beat it.

I live in Denver, there are no direct flights there.

I was planning on sending my stuff to the States when I traveled through some of Asia before I head back.

I have a friend that is in the military but he wont be back till the middle of this month which might be too late.

If it's a 'branded' desktop computer why not remove the important components from it - hard disk, memory, processor, video card, optical drive - and then sell it as a bare-bones box on Yahoo Auctions Japan. If it's a 100% DIY machine then take the motherboard out too and pick up a new case back home for less than $50.

PM me if you want help with Yahoo Auctions.

Alternatively, since luggage allowances to the US are ridiculously generous, do your Asia backpacking on a return ticket from Japan and then fly back to the US from here. Leave your items here with a friend while you're away. So long as you travel back to the US before the end of the academic year ticket prices from Japan will be excellent.

Ya, i think i am finding through the airline is the best way to do it. However, I am having a hard time finding a box that will be sufficient for all my stuff :(

If i do surface mail, itll cost about 13,000yen if i do 2 week economy airmail itll cost about double that. decisions decisions

delivery service offices should have boxes you might be able to buy.
