History Best Japanese History books to compliment each other? (Ancient and Modern Japan)

I've decided over the holiday to purchase some Japanese history 「日本語」 books to read. Cambridge is out of reach since I have no desire to pay an extremely high amount for books, so I've decided to settle on getting two books; one that focuses on ancient Japan and one that focuses on modern Japan.

For Modern Japan, I have decided to get The Making of Modern Japan by Marius S. Jansen. As for Ancient Japan, I am thinking about the first two books of History of Japan by George Sansom. I have liked what I have seen when I checked it out of my school library, though the book is dated. Nevertheless, is it still best to get these books or are there better ones out there? Note that I am looking for a comprehensive understanding of Japan and not just mention of what happened.

There's all kind of science such as dating, digs, and genetics that come to play in last few years so I suggest ignore any books more than couple years old.
