Asking what something next to something else is

Would it be correct to ask

本のとなり，なんですか

Or am I missing something?

It should be 本の隣はなんですか, 本の隣にあるのはなんですか, 本の隣にはなにがありますか or like that.

One thing I forgot to ask とりとべさん, I've seen it around in examples in my jpn/eng dictionary, but I haven't found info on it on the internet (might be a bit too advanced for me?). What is the use of の when put after the verb ある?

That's a pronoun just like "the one (existing) next to the book" in English, not a nominalizer. もの also can be used there.
