News Araiyakushi Baishoin temple in Nakano to offer Braille omikuji

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Braille's invention, Araiyakushi Baishoin temple in Nakano, Tokyo, will soon offer omikuji fortune-telling slips in Braille. The initiative was inspired by a Chinese international student intrigued by Japanese omikuji culture. The temple collaborated with a local welfare organization, Braille volunteers, and others to make this happen. The Braille omikuji, a rare offering, will allow visually impaired individuals to read their fortunes independently.

Chen Guo, 26, came to Japan in spring 2023 and now studies at the Nihon University Graduate School of Art while living in Tokyo. She first became interested in omikuji five years earlier, when she drew one at Asakusa's Senso-ji temple on a trip with family. While there are omikuji in China, she felt that the ones in Japan were more familiar to people, as there are even foreign language versions available. While studying hard to get into grad school, she was encouraged when she drew a fortune reading, "The first half is painful, but results will follow." She has drawn around 100 fortunes on visits to shrines and temples so far.
