I went to Waseda, but the exchange programs are different depending on the school you are coming from. Your best bet is to try to get in touch with alumni from your school's program; our experience was quite different from those from Oregon.

my program included a lot of travel that wasn't available for the other programs, although there were trips and other opportunities unique to each program. It's hard to list the differences, although academically we were all treated the shame.

Your best bet is to ask people that have actually been there. Find an alumni for your more specific queries.

there aren't many independently wealthy college students in Japan, or anywhere else for that matter.

Ha ha that's funny. Well i've applied for AGU and i'll know if i'm accepted next week. The next step is securing some plane tickets. Can i buy two one way tickets now? As in buy a one way ticket for going to tokyo in april and then buy one in august for returning? Or will i need to by a return ticket while i'm in japan?

Good luck on your application. I went to Aoyama 10 years ago from WOU, (you know that smaller university 30min north of you)
I can answer some of you questions from above, though it's been a few months since you posted them.
About dorms, your only choice looks to be aobadai, but you do get a single room to yourself. When I went the men all stayed in Josei-ryo, which is old and has shared rooms/baths etc. But it was located right in Omotesando, so it was convenient. I don't think they put exchange students there anymore.
Also, Aoyama is known to be fashionable, so thus the women from that school are considered fashionable and attractive. It is not the highest ranked school, ranking status has a lot to do with Japanese peoples opinion of a university.
If you go there you will probably be in my friends Japanese class, she is the sensei not a student.
