Ant and Dec - Racist?

This was over a year ago but if your in the UK you might of catched this, Ant and Dec are two main stream British comedians. Personaly I hate them, but I use to watch them if there were nothing else on.


On their show they dress up as people, often using rubber and make up to compleatly change how they look. Anyway last year they dressed up as two Japanese women, only they looked more like weird pig people. They then proceded to do stereotypical acents and performances, they went and met the cast of corinationstreet as 'fans' from Japan.

I was personaly realy shocked, and not shocked in a good way like south park went concerning race. But I dont know what I should be more shocked at, Ant and Dec for their attempt at comedy or fact the cast on the soap actualy belived them. They people are either stupid or ignorant, or both!

Anyone else see this and feel the same?

UK does seem to have a problem with keeping up with racial discrimination issues.

funny, the impression i get from our "great" nation is that the government will bend over and take it up the arse for wild out of control PC.

ide say it was just a joke in bad taste rather then actually racist, and for the most case i figure that kinda humor is religated to the lads in the pub on a friday evening or something.

frankly i think its more of a case of if your just that uptight and unflexable rather then it being racist, in my opinion its just bad taste.

Eh, wow.

I'm having a hard time believing that anyone could possibly think thats a good idea. Does that type of stuff happen regularly?

If that happened here in the States, letters would have been written, protests staged, sponsors pulled, etc. What was the reaction like over there?

I saw that show and thought it was pretty offensive, particularly for a show at 7-8pm on a Saturday. As far as I know, there was no reaction really. I remember they did a similar kind of thing with Carribean women. That was stereotypical crap too. British people are a bit odd. They complain in large numbers over innocent adverts, shows etc. but when something like this is on the screens, it doesn't seem to get mentioned.

Well, as an african-american, I think I can say that most comedy shows in the States which are aimed at "my" demographic are significantly worse than that. Shows like Comic View and Def Comedy Jam were chock-full of pretty racist or bigotted (if that's a word) humor. Sometimes it was light humor - like observational stuff. Which is generally okay. But other times, it was just flat out derrogatory.

I mean, I don't consider myself to be the most proper person in the world, and I'll make jokes in good fun - but there's sort of an art to it, and not really any sort of grey area. It's pretty much either "I can't believe he said that! HAHA!" and "I can't believe he said that! I'm writing an angry letter!"

Of course, the line to cross is in a different spot for everyone.
