I had never heard about this lady until I read the news about her speech last week in front of some 500 students. Mind she is the president of Kyushu International University in Fukuoka. In her remarks, she justified Japan's aggression in the Pacific and said that Japan waged war to help all the nations of Asia prosper and gain independence.

Nishikawa, 76, gave the lecture on Oct. 8 during an event marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Kumamoto prefectural Mifune High School, according to officials from the prefectural board of education and the school. All 490 or so students listened to the roughly one-hour lecture at the school gymnasium or online. Halfway through the lecture, Nishikawa referred to the Pacific War as the "Greater East Asia War" and insisted on the legitimacy of the war, according to the officials. The lecture was organized by a committee comprising the school alumni association, parents' association as well as teachers and staff. The school had no prior knowledge of the contents of the lecture, according to the officials.

Kyoko Nishikawa was an LDP representative in the Lower House from 2000 to 2014, and, of course, she is a member of Nippon Kaigi. Reading through the list of organisations she is affiliated with, I cannot hide my disgust with the sort of people swept into positions of power and influence in this country:

• Conference of young parliamentarians supporting the idea that the Yasukuni Shrine is a genuine national interest and desire for peace (平和を願い真の国益を考え靖国神社参拝を支持する若手国会議員の会)
• Alliance of Diet Members for Acting Toward the Fast Rescue of Japanese Victims Kidnapped by North Korea (北朝鮮に拉致された日本人を早期に救出するために行動する議員連盟 - Kita Chousen ni rachi sareta Nipponjin wo souki kyuushutsu suru tame ni koudou suru giin renmei)
• Japan Rebirth (創生「日本」- Sosei Nippon)
• Parliamentarians acting to protect the Japanese territory (日本の領土を守るため行動する議員連盟)

In 2013, Nishikawa referred to sexual slavery for the Imperial military ('Comfort women') as "mere prostitution".

Nishikawa gave the following answers to the questionnaire submitted by Mainichi to parliamentarians in 2014:

• in favour of the revision of Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution
• in favour of the right of collective self-defence
• in favour of nuclear plants
• no problem for visits of a Prime Minister to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine
• in favour of the revision of the Murayama Statement
• in favour of the revision of the Kono Statement
• against laws preventing hate speech
• considers Marine Corps Air Station Futenma is a burden for Okinawa
• in favour of the Special Secrecy Law
• in favour of teaching 'morality' in school

Reading her bio just blew off my lid. I don't think that her views are typical for her generation but what troubles me is that people like her are unleashed onto educational facilities to spit their nationalist venom.
