Another Remake!!!

I saw this and thought (with recent discussion) you guys may be interested...i haven't seen the original though.

Tom Hanks planning Japanese remake
Tom Hanks is reported to be planning a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1952 masterpiece 'Ikiru'.

The original Japanese film tells the story of a low-level bureaucrat who learns he has terminal stomach cancer and tries to change his life in order to have some impact on the world.

Dreamworks are in final negotiations about the film, with Richard Price ('The Colour of Money', 'Ransom') lined up write the screenplay.

never heard of the older version, but i will definately be looking forward to the release of this newer version.

..i may even try to rent the older one.. if i get the time.. ^^

I heard that Speilberg was actually either asked or is going to direct this as well. Let's face it...Hollywood has no creativety of their own anymore!

Surprised?

Once more hollywood proves that it's easier to pinch someones elses and probably make a hash of it. See The Assassin, The Ladykillers, The Ring etc etc. Never seen the original, but I am planning on getting it. Currently have six Kurosawa film and haven't been dissappointed yet

don't forget that new movie with richard gere and jlo, the ...thing that went with the dancing school. the original was like korean or something.... maybe it was japanese.. i don't know i haven't seen it in a long while.

I loved IKIRU, and can imagine Tom Hanks doing a great job!! Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors and I am sure he can fo a great job, however, let's wait and see if the remake of Ikiru is any good before any judgements.....

Add to this the news that Scorsese is lining up a remake of Kurosawa's "Drunken Angel" with Di Caprio filling in for Mifune's role.

There's also talk of a Chakushin Ari remake on the cards too - soon we will probably only be able to see the films we've already seen at the cinema. Should make for a strange experience.

The Gere ang JLO film is a remake af Masayuki Suo's "Shall we dansu". (dansu in katakana). I watched this at HBO 2 years ago or so, and I plan to order a DVD. I love this film.

Perhaps to you and me, but to Hollywood types who base pretty much everything they do on profit rather than artistic merit, it makes perfect sense. Put DiCaprio's name on the marquee, and it'll draw crowds (especially if he wins an Oscar for his portrayal of Howard Hughes in The Aviator), which means money in the box office, and that's the only things which matters to the bean counters who run the studios these days. Like it or not, that's the way things work in Hollywood.

It's time for the Americans to stop f*****g with other language movies !!!! They f'ed up Ju-on(The grudge) with their low level dumbass actors,f'ed up Ringu,and now soon Ringu 2 is going to get raped GRRRR....just keep ur hands off of japanese movies...(they even gonna licence Naruto and totally ruin the essence of the anime!!!)

It's bad enough they don't have any good ideas of their own, but raping other movies by remaking them goes to far !!!!

well, the way i see it...
if foreign cinema is remade, people will see the 'western' version of a film like the ring and anyone with any sense will seek out the original and make up their own mind (believe it or not, i do know someone who prefers the american ring to the japanese one). i wouldn't have know about the ring unless i had heard of the remake (the ring was only the 2nd asian film i saw) and from there my knowledge grew and i have seen many foreign films since.
think of it like cover songs. people hear a ****** cover version on the radio and then check out the original!

Hai, good advertising--well, not good but advertising nontheless.

Still, something about the idea of DiCraprio playing a Mifune role makes me physically ill. Even if we utterly ignore his lack of talent, there's no way DiCaprio would ever look the part of a Mifune role--exept perhaps as Tsubaki Sanjuro.

(Somehow I doubt anyone will get that reference...)

Ah, DiCaprio sucks both in looks and actor's talent. He's such a jerk. Anyway, DiCaprio and katana... That's look even more funny for me.

Who would be good for the main role? Any suggestions. I don't have any.

I genuinely feel that Di Caprio is a superb actor (he was excellent in The Aviator - a truly superb performance) but have to agree that he's probably not right for a Mifune style role - but this isn't down to acting talent but merely presence - unfortunately Di Caprio has too boyish an appearance and the role would demand someone who appears to have that same ferocity and power that Mifune effortlessly had.

Then again there doesnt really seem to be that many actors internationally capable of fitting that mould. After all how many samurai tv shows end up featuring hairspray boy band idols trying desperately to act tough with a pantomime style machismo but coming off as just children having a tantrum.

Gone are the days of the tough guy actors.

I think so too, he's fit for playing some funny roles or serious roles....but nothing japanese. Di Caprio his mug wouldn't even be shown on tv if it depends on me ;-)

Wouldn't have to see remakes if the distributors got their thumbs out of their arses and put more 'foreign' films into the cimemas. Unfortunatly Hollywood money talks and so they can squeeze out the smaller independent films and the 'foreign' film so they can fill our minds with mush. There was a time when hollywood did make decent films, even had thier own ideas.

On the other hand - asian cinema rips off Hollywood films by the bucketload too- but we dont complain about that. Wong Kar Wai's "As Tears Go By" is nothing more than a slim-line version of Mean Streets with added melodrama - at least in the US they actually bother to pay for the rights to the films they tear apart.

Cinema from all countries influence everyone and i think its just a case of swings and roundabouts, at the moment asian cinema is having a rennaissance period where it is enjoying an influx of talented writers and directors creating original works that will invariably travel around the world - who knows how long it will last but it will no doubt shift at some point to another region. That's just how it works - whether it will be the US or France or even UK (wishful thinking ) all the other countries left in the shade will inevitably sit up and take notice after all as harsh as it sounds - film is a business first and an art form second (maybe not for the director - but certainly for the producer who has to put in his money to fund the films being made) and when a film is wildly successfull it becomes a template for a good profit return - just how many films have been released in a similar vein to Ringu since it was released - note also no-one seems to be complaining about the god awful Korean film "The Ring Virus" at least the US "Ring" had gorgeous cinematography to boast.
