Hence the SDF is Japan's military

If you notice I wrote that the only thing stopping the SDF from being recognized as a military "officially" is the Japanese constitution.

Here the SDF and a military would be two apples from the same tree. However the perceptions that Japan doesnt have an active offensive military is what keeps everyone in Asia at bay.

I guess the reason why Japanese want to rebuild its
armed forces is: they worry about their future.
Maybe American will protect Japan for another 20 years
but after that, Japanese will gradually find themself
living in the shadow of another superpower.
that make them nervous. right?

As a tax payer, we can save some tax if the government would lift the strict small arms export policy.
As I want to laugh at the hypocracy in other countries, she should keep the policy.

Just looking over this forum and 2ch.net, it seems many Japanese still feel they have only helped East Asia liberate from the West, and do not receive the credit they deserve. They feel Asians should be thanking them backwards for the colonial period.
Until they have that issue figured out, Japanese military expansion will only bring arms race in the region.

lots of Japanese think they modernized Korea, Taiwan, and Philippines, and if it wasnt for the modernization, Korea or Taiwan would still be living in poverty.

In the view of ultra rightwingists, Korea and Taiwan should thank japan for colonial period, not complain about it.

That is a FACT (although I doubt the Japanese modernized the Philippines). If there is one side to the story, there is also the other side. It's not like everything is so black and white.

Likewise, there are some people in the US who think the First Nations of the Americas should just merge with US culture (as if it was only one) and totally forget about the past. I've heard at least one guy in a class say something "look at all the technology we brought them" "they should be grateful. they'd be living in the stone age if it was not for us"

Then compare that to if the Germans had won in WW2 and they complained about ingrate conquered Polish people living in a German empire that should be thankful for all the high German technology that was brought to them.
