Nature Aichi escapee penguin saved after two weeks

Heart-warming news.

A 6-year-old penguin lady which escaped from a public event on Himaka Island in Aichi Prefecture was successfully recaptured after two weeks on the loose. The Cape penguin, also known as an African penguin, was found in good health, approximately 30 kilometres from its original location. The penguin, which had never swum in the open ocean before its escape on 25 August, is believed to have travelled over 40 kilometres along the western coast of the Chita Peninsula.

"I'm surprised at the penguin's physical ability and adaptability," said staff member Imai Ryosuke. "We're relieved that she's been found." The group, which offers lectures and events that allow people to interact with animals around Aichi Prefecture, held the Himaka Island display between 20 July and 25 August. The penguin escaped after being placed in the shallows surrounded by a net as staff tried to keep it cool under the baking sun. It swam through a hole in its enclosure after being spooked. A person reported seeing the animal about a week later around the nearby Shino Island, but a search failed to locate it. The bird was recaptured after being spotted near Shinmaiko Marine Park in Chita, Aichi Prefecture. It approached staff when called by name.

How amazing.

The way the penguin was going, it was probably lucky that they found it when they did. It was starting to travel into some pretty busy waters. The port of Nagoya isn't very far from there, and that's the direction it was headed if it continued along its path.

I'm glad about that. Not only do I love penguins but the population of Cape penguins is rapidly declining. They are projected to be extinct in a few years for the usual reasons - climate change and overfishing making their food source increasingly difficult to come by.

Cape penguins inhabit the coastlines of South Africa and Namibia.
They feed on fish such as anchovy and squid and grow to about 70 centimetres in length.
