What do i do if someone starts rattling on in japanese at me?.

This is because sometime this year i will be visitting japan and, as it stands, my girlfriend sometimes talks to me in japanese, and being to dumb gaijin i am, she speaks too fast even if i could understand most of it.

I ussually have to rely on words i Already know and guage what she wants to say from that.

If I was in your place, I would just say in Japanese "excuse me, but can you speak more slowly, I didn't hear you" or something like that. 😌

Or is that some kind of horrible social gaffe I don't know about?

Is there a possibility that she is gauging her speaking output/speed/level based on past cues from you, such as nodding or otherwise giving the appearance of understanding her beyond what you actually do?

Now What You Need To Do......

is have some business cards printed up in Japanese that say you are deaf and to please use sign language or write on a pad of paper in English to communicate with you. Chances are they won't know sign language.

Frank

:p 😊
