Active Kyoto

So yeah I am planning on going to Kyoto with a good Japanese friend of mine and would like to do something active... something else than visiting temples and seeing old Japan (kyoto might not be the bet place lol... so anything in Osaka or Nara would be fine as well)

Anyone some good ideas, or experiences? I am thinking of hiking as well... but I want something more active/extreme.

what that the girl can't swim and is afraid of heights... There goes the Canoe trip and the rafting idea...

Maybe we should rent a bicycle... but where to go with that. Kyoto people help me out !

Well you could strap a life jacket on her...
But most of the extreme things I could think of involved water or heights. Maybe get some mountain bikes?

I for one believe that sightseeing is pretty "active", especially in Kyoto. I wish it was just in front of my door, Davey!

You could definitely combine hiking and sightseeing. The area north of Kyoto, around Ohara is full of temples and shrines and offers plenty of nature. If you seek adventure, go there by bicycle.

nothing active as in being stuck in the bus on your way to Kinkakuji....

yeah, hiking would be good... near Kinkakuji you have the Daimonji... that's an option...

Don't know how you would find one.............

but one of the most memorable things I went to was a "silk for sale" convention . There must have been a thousand rolls of silk on display. The colors and designs were amazing. Another cool thing I got to see was a koi fish farm. There must have been 15 or 20 pools with all different sizes and colors of fish.

Get a bike and ride from Kobe over Awaji Island to Shikoku.
Go to Amanohashidate in Kyoto, get a bike, enjoy the beach and the 松 trees and enjoy the upside down view between your legs of the bridge up to heaven (... somehow this sounds a bit ambivalent *g*)
Hike up to old castle ruins in Nara Prefecture.

There are so many things to do!!!

Kobe has some great hiking options, too!
Absolutely worth checking out!

Koi Fish farm Sounds interesting I will look into it. Silk convention, maybe if I had more money

Kobe is great and there are many things to do indeed! The only thing is that I live in Kobe and have seen much of it already and would like to try a different place for a change (Nara or Himeji would be nice as well).

Although the river cruise looks a bit long, it has some interesting parts where you can get wet and enjoy the nature. Hiking after wards is an idea as well.

How is Kyoto by Bicycle? My image of the traffic inside Kyoto is just horrible so riding a bicycle doesn't sound very fun.

I guess outside of Kyoto's center, it could be a nice experience.
In places like Gion it might be very annoying because of the crowds of people - depending on when you go, of course.

So, you'd prefer something outside of Hyogo Prefecture then, I suppose.
Difficult as I personally love to visit temples, shrines and castles, so I wouldn't know about other things, I guess.
I'm sure there are plenty of things to do, though.

If I come up with something, I'll let you know!

P.S.: Anybody else felt the earthquake a few minutes ago that mainly hit the Chugoku area and parts of Kyushu?

in kyoto you can enjoy three things at almost the same place:
1. hozu river boats almost 3,500 yen each for a two hour trip
2. arashiyama monkey mountain
3. torokko train also in arashiyama.

enjoy!
