An American says that they don't really say "TV news". Is that true?

For a major news story that all media would likely be reporting, though, it is usually not necessary to specify which news source it came from.

It sounds ok to me too. But it's true that most people wouldn't say this because it doesn't really matter if the news is from the TV or radio or wherever. More common is to name the network. "According to NHK News..."

I would say, "I heard on the news on TV that..." or "According to the news on TV,..." or "According to ABC News,..."

I should add that native speakers in America would automatically know that ABC News is TV news, not radio, newspaper, or something else.

That would be the usual assumption but not necessarily. I listen to ABC News on Slacker Radio more than I view ABC News on TV.
