I would not really think of this as a 'Japan issue'. This actually happens a lot where I am from, in Mexico and we are not known to be as the most 'hard-working, pressured people'. Even in the U.S. this happens a lot, you see reports and documentaries on domestic violence, young couples violence as well, so it might not really be 'pressure', it is hard to take it for granted.
On the other hand, yes, Japanese people are more pressured to do well. More than I expected. Just take for example a girl in my school, a last-year student who was asked a question and didn't know the answer, so she just began crying. Too much pressure, I think. It is now normal for me to get home everyday at 9pm after practice, I mean, this would be unthinkable on any western-deloped nation, wouldn't it?
