5.1 surround help

Hello to all Geek fellows
I just got my 5.1 surround sound Philips speakers.
I had no trouble setting them up.
My question is : Is there a way to configure them properly ?
I know i can do it the way i like it but i find this method wrong because sometimes when i make things the way i like i miss alot of things.
For exmaple i tend to ajust the brightness of my monitor to 30 and contrast to 100.This way i don't have headache after working with the PC for long hours but on the other heand i miss a lot in colors and in what i can see whith such settings.

That's why i want to ask if there is some way of configuring the speakers in the right way ?
I have controls for every speaker and a separate control on the Sub Woofer box.

Ideally

Ideally, you want the speakers to be the same distance away from you as they are from each other (an equilateral triangle). The rear speakers are not as loud because they are meant to be placed beside you at the same distance from each other as the front ones are from you. You want the rear speakers to be hushed to about 60% the loudness of the front stereo speakers. The front speaker is also naturally the loudest because the main figures in movies are always in front of you. The subwoofer is at whatever you prefer... hehe (personally, the louder, the better wahahaha). But the subwoffer should be set to about 40-80dB. Any more and you may blow them.

50-60 dB is typical of speech, and 80 dB of a busy street

You can always check the net... I hope I could help answer your question. I'm sure there is some better advice out there... hehe... but it is also up to you... you have to play with it and test it to see what works for you.

They're computer speakers? If so, they'll usually come with a program to help with configuration, and there are probably free programs available, just do a search.

As for placement, just follow Annubis's advice.

That's exacly the information i was looking for.
On the net they only show where to place them.
That's why i asked here because the volume of the rear speakers behind me was too low by default and i was wondering if that's normal
So now i know that everything is fine thank you

One thing to remember is that the author of the movie is ultimately the one who decides the loudness of the rear speakers. For instance, if the action is behind you, than all the sound comes from behind. I have made a surround sound audio track once, so that is why I can give you this information... But if the movie doesn't have a rear sound track, than it will be 0%. A friend of mine says that for music, you may want the speakers in the rear to be at 40%. He also says that it is up to you and you have to play with it until you are invelopped with the sound.
