Counts as cheating if you ask me.

Since there was no guidance on that or anything, I decided that it was probably more in the spirit of the test to not check them. In real life, I'd just go ahead and understand them anyway, whether I could read them out loud or not. If I stopped to look up every little thing like that, or stopped to study enough to fill up all the gaps in my kanji knowledge, I'd have no time left over for anything else.

There should really be someone around to denounce that as "Not reading" about now ... that's what we get for not being in slj.

Screw 'em. All I know is I finish the book, figuring reading 80% and guessing the remainder is sufficient, while the purists get bogged down slogging through dictionaries. I guess some of them must make it through. The main difference, I suppose, is that when I read a Japanese book I do so either for my own entertainment or because I want the info it contains. I don't look on it as a chance to study Japanese.

When I decided to start trying to read Japanese books, I decided that I would treat Japanese books the same way I have always treated day-to-day life in Japan: I would either make it without dictionaries or I just wouldn't make it.

Really, what's the difference? If you can get by with everyday life without major misunderstandings, then I doubt anyone would really care if you know all the readings for 囑.
